Unrest continued well into Saturday night in Santiago despite Chilean President Sebastian Pinera suspending a planned transport fare hike, the initial spark for the mass protests.

Burning buses and metro stations dotted the Chilean capital, with water cannon and firefighters used to put out the flames. Soldiers were on the streets after the government imposed a state of emergency.

Drone footage also shows the extent of the damage to the headquarters of Italian utility company Enel Chile, which was targeted on Friday.

The recent protests were sparked by the now-withdrawn transport fare hike, but have since evolved into a movement with wider grievances aimed at addressing the rising cost of living and police conduct during demonstrations. Pinera has announced a working group to address protesters’ concerns.
