Lebanese security forces used tear gas against protesters who vandalised the country’s central bank on Tuesday, after a week-long lull in demonstrations in Beirut.

The street clashes near the central bank came as protesters blocked roads around the capital to express their impatience at the Lebanese government’s handling of the country’s struggling economy.

The protesters directed their anger at banks, which have imposed capital controls on foreign currency – the country is dollar reliant.

They smashed the windows of banks and foreign exchange bureaus near the central bank.

The violence took place on one of Beirut’s most bustling commercial boulevards, Hamra Street, which is packed with theatres and restaurants.
