New Orangutan Species Discovered in Indonesian Rain Forest – New York Times

Providing further evidence that the world’s rain forests must be protected, scientists have discovered a seventh great ape species they have named the Tapanuli orangutan. The finding is particularly significant because it has upended what was previously held to be orangutan evolution. So of course, this New Great Ape Stirs Hopes of Finding Mysterious Sumatran Cryptid called the Orang Pendek. Researchers are speculating that if a new species of orangutan could be discovered once in the rainhforest ecosystem, perhaps a second one could be hiding in there, too. (CM)
